UK damp and humidity guide

Best humidity meter for UK homes: what to look for

Before buying a dehumidifier, mould spray or ventilation product, it is worth measuring the problem. A small humidity meter can show whether a room is actually too humid.

Measure before guessing

Humidity meters are cheap, simple and useful for spotting patterns across rooms.

Track trends

Patterns matter more than one perfect reading.

Move it around

Compare rooms before spending on bigger fixes.

Avoid windowsills

Cold glass can distort the reading.

What humidity should a UK home be?

Many UK homes feel comfortable around the middle range. If a room regularly sits above 60% relative humidity, especially overnight or after drying clothes, condensation and mould risk can increase.

Features that matter

Look for a clear display, relative humidity and temperature, max/min memory, a comfort indicator, easy battery replacement and a stand or wall-mount option.

Do you need one or several?

A single meter can be moved around, but multi-packs help compare bedrooms, bathrooms, living rooms and utility areas. Damp problems are often room-specific.

Where to place it

Keep the meter away from direct sunlight, radiators, windows and the dehumidifier outlet. A shelf, chest of drawers or bedside table is usually better than a windowsill.

Accuracy expectations

Cheap hygrometers are good enough for spotting patterns. Focus on trends: does humidity spike after showers, rise overnight, or stay high after drying clothes?
