Winter is when black mould spreads fastest in UK homes. Here is why it gets worse when the heating comes on and how to treat and prevent it.

Cold spaces trap damp air

In winter, sealed rooms and colder surfaces make mould return quickly unless humidity is brought down consistently.

Why black mould gets worse in winter

Black mould thrives where three conditions are met: temperature above roughly 10C, humidity above 70% relative humidity, and an organic surface to grow on. In winter, UK homes provide all three and we create more moisture too.

We close windows and doors to keep warm, which traps moisture from cooking, showering and indoor drying. The walls and window frames stay cold because outside temperatures are low, creating surfaces where that moisture condenses. Bedrooms are worst affected because they are occupied for long periods, often with doors closed, and because overnight moisture from breathing adds to the humidity load.

The combination of sealed rooms, cold surfaces and high humidity from daily activities is exactly what black mould needs to grow. October through February is peak season for black mould complaints in UK homes not because the mould itself is seasonal, but because the conditions that cause it are.

Where black mould appears in winter

Winter condensation mould has a fairly predictable pattern in UK homes. Knowing where to look helps you catch it early:

How to treat black mould in winter

Winter treatment follows the same principles as any other time of year the difference is you must be more careful about ventilation during and after treatment:

  1. Protect yourself: Wear an FFP2 or FFP3 mask, rubber gloves and eye protection. Open a window and use an extractor fan before you start.
  2. Apply mould treatment: Use a dedicated black mould treatment spray not just bleach. Apply to the affected area and leave for the recommended time (usually 15-30 minutes). Do not scrub aggressively as this spreads spores.
  3. Ventilate during treatment: Keep that window open, even in cold weather. Cold outside air entering the room carries less moisture than warm indoor air, so ventilation works even in winter.
  4. Wipe clean and dry: Wipe the treated area with a clean, damp cloth. Rinse frequently. Then dry the surface thoroughly a dehumidifier in the room for a few hours after treatment helps.
  5. Run a dehumidifier: After treatment, run a dehumidifier in the room for several hours to ensure the humidity stays well below 65% while the surface dries completely.

The most important point: if you treat the mould but do not fix the humidity problem, it will return. Often within weeks. The treatment buys you time; fixing humidity prevents it coming back.

Window seals

The rubber seals around windows are the most common winter mould location. Wipe them dry each morning and treat any existing mould with a dedicated spray. Preventing condensation pooling in the seal is the key a dehumidifier helps most.

Bedroom walls and ceiling corners

Cold corners where two external walls meet are prime winter mould spots. Keep furniture away from external walls, ventilate every morning, and use a dehumidifier in the bedroom from October onwards.

Bathroom ceiling

Bathroom ceiling mould in winter can spread fast because the room is used multiple times a day in cold weather when windows are kept closed. Use the extractor fan every time, leave the door closed, and treat ceiling corners before they spread.

Behind furniture

Mould can grow behind sofas and wardrobes against external walls without being visible. Pull furniture away from external walls every few weeks in winter to check, air the area, and treat any mould found before it spreads.

How to prevent black mould all winter

Prevention in winter requires more consistency than in summer because the conditions that cause mould build up faster in sealed, heated rooms:
