Extractor fan
Most effective single step. If you do not have one, or the existing one is weak, install or upgrade it first before buying a dehumidifier. Look for a fan with an extraction rate of at least 150 m/hr for a small kitchen.
UK kitchen humidity guide
Kitchens generate more moisture than any other room in a UK home. Here is how to manage kitchen humidity and when a dehumidifier helps.
UK guide
Kettles, hobs and washing up all add humidity. A kitchen dehumidifier helps manage moisture from cooking and ventilation gaps.
A lot. Boiling a litre of water on the hob adds roughly a litre of water vapour to the air. A family cooking two meals a day can add several litres of moisture daily from cooking alone, before showering, laundry and breathing are factored in. In a well-ventilated kitchen with a working extractor fan, this moisture disperses safely. In a kitchen with poor ventilation no extractor fan, small windows, or a layout that traps steam that moisture settles on cold surfaces as condensation.
Signs your kitchen has too much moisture after cooking: water droplets on kitchen cabinets, windows that stay fogged for more than 30 minutes after cooking, mould growing in the corners of kitchen ceilings, a persistent musty smell near the sink or inside cabinets, and damp tea towels or dishcloths that do not dry overnight.
A dehumidifier is useful in a kitchen but it should not be a substitute for proper ventilation. These steps cost nothing and make a significant difference:
A dehumidifier is worth considering if:

Handles moisture that ventilation misses. A compact or mid-range unit placed near the cooking area helps manage humidity from daily cooking. Continuous drainage is useful for kitchens because tanks fill quickly during heavy cooking sessions.
Free and effective. Open the window above the hob during cooking and for 15 minutes after. A small gap year-round, even in winter, prevents moisture accumulation far more than occasional large window openings.
Steam and condensation settle on kitchen cabinet surfaces, especially above the hob and around the sink. Wipe down cabinet doors and handles after cooking if condensation forms regularly. This prevents moisture from seeping into chipboard edges and causing swelling or mould.
If you have decided a dehumidifier is worth having in the kitchen, these are the features that matter most for that specific use:
Different dehumidifier types have different strengths for kitchen use.
| Type | Kitchen suitability | Continuous drain | Noise | Price range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Compressor | Good for warm, standard UK kitchens | Usually available | Moderate | £100-£200 |
| Desiccant | Better for cool kitchen-diners and extensions | Standard on most models | Quieter than compressor | £150-£300 |
| Peltier | Only suitable for very small kitchens | Rare | Very quiet | 3060 |
